Today I went to Museo Casa Guayasamin to measure up the space for the Liquid Heat exhibit. Casa Guayasamin is an old colonial building in La Habana Vieja, formerly the studio of painter Oswaldo Guaysamin and now museum to a large collection of his paintings.
In Cuba it is common for certain school classes to take place in museums and art galleries to sensitisise the young students to art and culture. Today a maths class was in process on the patio.
I was accompanied by Eugenio Chavez of the Festival de Danza en Paisajes Urbanos, and Santiago Alfonso, the former Artistic Director of Tropicana. As we measured up the space the gallery ‘s walls the children recognised Santiago, now a household name from Bailando en Cuba, the Cuban TV dance competition show. Suddenly the maths class was abandoned. The teacher asked Santiago to step in, and the maths class was replaced by a class on a career in dance and an autograph session.
