Life on the Edge has been in development for a couple of years. Behind the scenes I’ve been working to reach out to community organisations, take some initial photos and build a team. A year ago I did the first photo shoot with skateboarder Helena Long in Stockwell Skate Park. It was a beautiful sunny day, and Helena raced, jumped, flew across the park as if she was part of the landscape.
It was exciting to see her move, and it was wonderful to see the community of skateboarders – all ages, all levels – sharing their passion for their sport. That day Helena talked not only about her passion for her skateboarding, but also for the sense of belonging, ease and support that the skateboarding community shared.
This is why I am making Life on the Edge happen – to inspire young people to share the pleasure of the movement, develop skills and be part of a community.
Since the day of that photo shoot, the vision has got more ambitious. What was a project for one neighbourhood became a project for London and then for the country. I’m looking forward to the journey.
